About

Our organization began as a Working Group that came from discussions at the 2019 PREA Coordinators National Conference hosted by the Western States PREA Auditing Consortium. Coordinators from nine states volunteered to establish the PREA Coordinators Working Group. In a relatively short time, we developed a strong working relationship with the PREA Resource Center (PRC), which has proven mutually valuable. For example, we’ve had the opportunity to offer our collective perspective and solutions on auditing issues created by the COVID-19 pandemic; review technology and tools for use in the field; and partner on conference planning. We also have the pleasure of collaborating with other national subject matter experts in the field, like Just Detention International and The Moss Group.

In April 2025, we established the National Association of PREA Coordinators, a nonstock corporation in the State of Wisconsin. The primary goal of the NAPC is to improve the implementation and effectiveness of the Prison Rape Elimination Act and sexual abuse prevention in confinement settings.

Our Association carves out space to exchange knowledge, best practices, and policy innovations among PREA Coordinators, correctional administrators, and staff. We collaborate with others who share the goal to advance compliance and a culture of sexual safety in confinement. We collaborate to identify evidence-based custodial policies, training programs, and facility features to enhance safety for staff and incarcerated people, mitigate the risk of sexual victimization, and further adherence to PREA standards. As a community, we work to develop and promote promising practices to make custodial settings safer for those who live and work there.

We believe in championing the humane treatment of incarcerated people, the meaningful prosecution of those who commit acts of sexual abuse, and supporting survivors.

Thank you for your interest in the National Association of PREA Coordinators. We look forward to welcoming you to the conversation.
